A winter hound hunt built around covering country, identifying a mature tom track and following trained hounds when the right track is found.
The team may cover country before daylight looking for a mature tom track. Snow can help judge the track, but the hounds do not require snow to work a lion.
Be ready for winter weather, early starts, uneven terrain and potentially demanding travel on foot once the hounds are working.
Ask about current quota status, districts, winter conditions, physical demands, equipment and how the hound hunt is structured.
Day-to-day expectations
No two days are identical. Weather, animal movement, terrain, the hunter's ability and the guide's plan determine how the day unfolds.
The team may cover country before daylight looking for a mature tom track.
When snow is available it helps the team judge whether the track is a mature tom worth pursuing.
Once the right track is found, trained hounds work the trail while the guide and hunter follow the hunt.
Terrain, snow, roads and the distance the lion travels can make each day very different.
